Mumbai, September 19: Music composer and vocalist Salim Merchant has come under fire from some social media users following his recent visit to the Kamakhya Temple located in Guwahati, Assam.

During his visit, Salim shared images alongside a friend, both of whom were seen with folded hands in front of the temple after receiving blessings.

In the photos, Salim wore a white T-shirt paired with dark trousers, complemented by a red religious stole draped over his shoulders and a garland around his neck.

On his social media platform, he captioned the images in Hindi: "Shakti ke charanon mein, Om Aim Hreem Kleem Kamakhye Namah."

While a number of users responded positively with heart and folded-hands emojis, others expressed skepticism regarding his display of devotion.

Comments included remarks like, "Astaghfirullah from all muslims side," indicating a call for forgiveness on behalf of the Muslim community.

Another user questioned, "Our shirk kia jiski maafi ni Quran me Hy btao saleem," challenging Salim about the concept of shirk in Islam.

Additionally, one comment read, "Ali Ali na kia kr na ahlbait ka zikar kia kr," advising against mentioning Ali or the Ahl al-Bayt.

This incident is not the first time Salim's expressions of faith towards Hindu deities have sparked debate online.

In March 2026, he discussed his routine of praying to Lord Shiva on Mondays while also participating in Jummah prayers on Fridays.

Salim emphasized his respect for both faiths and described his relationship with God and music as profound and complex.
