EA Rajendran: A Tribute to the Veteran Actor

EA Rajendran, a distinguished actor and director in the Malayalam film industry, passed away at the age of 71 at his home in Pattathanam, Kollam, following a lengthy illness. He began his artistic journey in theatre before transitioning to films and television, where he featured in approximately 60 films across various genres. A proud alumnus of the National School of Drama, he was also affiliated with the Kalidasa Kalakendram troupe. In addition to his acting career, he held the position of Chairman at the State Horticulture Corporation and was related to actor Mukesh through marriage.

Who Was EA Rajendran? A Glimpse into His Life and Career

EA Rajendran had been receiving treatment for a chronic illness prior to his passing at his residence in Kollam. His death signifies the conclusion of a significant and influential career in the performing arts. He was the brother-in-law of the well-known actor and politician Mukesh. Born to Ayyappan and Sumathi in Thrithallur, Thrissur district, Rajendran exhibited a keen interest in performance from a young age, actively engaging in school plays that set the stage for his future endeavors. After completing his college education, he enrolled in the esteemed National School of Drama in Delhi, graduating with top honors. He further honed his skills by taking a television course at the Film Institute in Pune, where he also met Sandhya, the daughter of O. Madhavan and sister of Mukesh, whom he later married.

Rajendran's career commenced in theatre, where he became a prominent member of the Kalidasa Kalakendram troupe in Kollam, established by his father-in-law. With the encouragement of playwright Jose Chirammal, he adapted a Russian novel into a stage play that earned the Kerala State Government Award for Best Play in 1987. For many years, he and his wife Sandhya were leading figures in the troupe. Although he initially faced challenges in securing mainstream film roles, he eventually made a significant comeback with the film Kaliyattam, directed by Jayaraj. Over the years, he established a strong presence in Malayalam cinema, acting in notable films such as Pranayavarnangal, Daya, and Pattabhishekam. In addition to his contributions to the arts, he was active in public service as the Chairman of the State Horticulture Corporation and appeared in numerous Malayalam television serials throughout his career.

EA Rajendran is survived by his wife, Sandhya Rajendran, and their son, Divyadarsan Rajendran Engoor, affectionately known as Divyadarsan. His funeral is set to take place in Thrissur on Friday.
