Relief For Ranjith
Judicial First Class Magistrate L Usha approved Ranjith's bail on April 10. During the hearing, the court observed that the prosecution had not submitted any new custody requests. Ranjith's attorney informed the court that his client had not received any prior notice before the proceedings commenced. Furthermore, he stated that Ranjith had not contested his arrest or the previous custody order and was prepared to cooperate fully with the investigation.
Despite the prosecution's objections, claiming Ranjith had not cooperated with the investigating officer during his three-day police custody, the court still granted him bail.
Background of the Case
All About The Case
The allegations date back to January 30, 2025, when a young actress accused Ranjith of attempting to sexually assault her inside a caravan during a film shoot. Following her complaint, the Ernakulam police filed an FIR and recorded her confidential statement before detaining the director. Ranjith was arrested on March 31 in Thodupuzha and subsequently presented before the magistrate, who placed him in judicial custody. He has been held at the Ernakulam Sub Jail since then.
He faces multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 74 (assault with intent to outrage modesty), Section 75 (sexual harassment), and Section 79 (acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman), all of which are non-bailable offenses. This is not the first instance of such allegations against Ranjith; in 2024, a Bengali actress accused him of attempted molestation dating back to 2009, but that case was dismissed by the Kerala High Court due to delays in filing. Additionally, a separate case involving a male aspiring actor was also dismissed by the Karnataka High Court after being deemed false. Ranjith has consistently denied all allegations against him.
