Changing Dynamics for Actresses in Bollywood

The landscape for actresses in Bollywood has transformed significantly. No longer are they sidelined for choosing marriage in their 30s. Deepika Padukone, for instance, is openly taking a break to care for her young child while advocating for an 8-hour workday. Alia Bhatt is also thriving, securing impactful roles even after becoming a mother. Rani Mukerji's recent National Award win further illustrates this shift in the industry. In a recent interview, the Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway star reflected on how both the film industry and audiences have played a role in her success.

Rani Mukerji Discusses Balancing Family and Career

In a conversation with Bombay Times, Rani expressed that she feels like she is entering a new chapter in her professional life. She noted that her appearance has evolved since her earlier films. With her daughter Adira now 10 years old, Rani finds herself with more time to dedicate to her career and is excited about reinventing her image for her fans. She expressed her appreciation for filmmakers who have continued to offer her strong roles throughout the past decade, even while she managed the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. "Fortunately, that didn’t hinder directors from casting me. In a way, both the audience and the industry have helped me break the glass ceiling. There’s a common belief that once an actress starts a family, her career is over. But that’s not the case for everyone. I cherish my role as an actress, but I also love being a housewife and a mother," she shared.

Rani highlighted the importance of having the support of her husband and daughter throughout her film career, acknowledging that such encouragement is vital for women, though many may not have the same backing. She expressed gratitude for her own supportive circumstances.
