Bollywood star Rajpal Yadav has encountered a significant legal hurdle as the Delhi High Court confirmed his conviction in a longstanding cheque bounce case linked to the financing of his directorial debut. On July 10, the court dismissed his appeal, labeling his actions as "dubious" and ordered his return to prison. Yadav, recognized for his roles in films such as Hungama, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Partner, was last seen in Welcome to the Jungle and Bhooth Bangla.

Background of the Cheque Bounce Case

The recent ruling marks another chapter in a legal saga that has plagued Yadav for over ten years. The issue traces back to 2010 when he borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his ambitious film Ata Pata Laapata. Unfortunately, the film flopped, leaving him unable to repay the loan, which sparked a protracted legal battle. In April 2018, a magistrate court found Yadav and his wife Radha guilty of cheque dishonour, sentencing them to six months in prison. The sessions court upheld this conviction in early 2019, prompting Yadav to appeal to the Delhi High Court.

During the proceedings, the High Court granted interim relief by suspending Yadav's sentence in June 2024, while urging him to make earnest efforts to settle his debts, which had reportedly ballooned to nearly Rs 9 crore. However, the court noted his repeated failures to meet repayment commitments.

High Court's Directive for Rajpal Yadav

Earlier this year, the High Court ordered Yadav to surrender after determining he had not adhered to its previous directives. He publicly acknowledged his financial struggles before surrendering, stating he lacked the funds to clear his dues and saw no other options. Following the court's order, he was incarcerated in Delhi's Tihar Jail before being granted bail in February. The latest ruling has reaffirmed his earlier conviction and mandated his re-arrest.
