R Madhavan Discusses His Son's Journey in Swimming

R Madhavan recently opened up about his son, Vedaant Madhavan, who is quickly becoming one of India's standout competitive swimmers with dreams of clinching an Olympic medal. In an engaging discussion with Radhika Gupta on the YouTube channel 100 Year Life Project by ACKO, Madhavan highlighted the significance of nurturing gratitude and awareness in his son, especially considering the privileges associated with their lifestyle.

Reflecting on his own childhood, Madhavan shared that despite his middle-class roots, his achievements have enabled him to offer Vedaant numerous opportunities. He remarked, “One of the essential qualities a child should possess is an attitude of gratitude. It’s vital for children to recognize their privilege, as it stems from the hard work of others who have paved the way for them.” This belief is fundamental to the values he wishes to instill in Vedaant.

To ensure Vedaant remains grounded, Madhavan often talks to him about the realities of their lifestyle. He recounted moments when he would disclose the earnings of their cook, demonstrating the effort required to earn money. “I would say, ‘Do you realize how much this toy you received costs? This person would need to work an entire year just to afford a part of it,’” Madhavan shared. Such discussions have profoundly influenced Vedaant’s perception of privilege and accountability.

Beyond fostering gratitude, Madhavan stresses the importance of respect for all individuals, irrespective of their social standing. He encourages Vedaant to treat everyone, from lift operators to drivers, with respect, referring to them as didis and bhaiyas. This practice goes beyond mere politeness; it aims to develop situational awareness and empathy in his son.

Vedaant is already making significant strides in the swimming arena, having won multiple medals at international events, including five golds at the Malaysian Open, along with medals at competitions in Denmark, Latvia, and Thailand. His father, R Madhavan, takes pride in Vedaant’s aspirations to represent India at the Olympics. Meanwhile, the actor is busy with his film projects, including GDN, Adhirshtasaali, and Circle, following his recent acclaimed role in Dhurandhar.
