His cremation is scheduled today, with the Tamil film industry halting all activities in tribute. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the death of renowned director, producer, and screenwriter Bharathiraja, recognizing him as a monumental figure in the film industry whose contributions significantly influenced Tamil cinema. Bharathiraja passed away on Wednesday in Chennai due to complications related to aging, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that shifted Tamil storytelling from traditional studio formats to authentic rural narratives. His films are known for their emotional depth and realism, effectively redefining Tamil cinema's narrative style. Bharathiraja's works have garnered numerous awards and continue to resonate with audiences and film aficionados alike.

Prime Minister Modi Mourns Bharathiraja's Passing

Prime Minister Modi took to social media to express his condolences, referring to Bharathiraja as a pivotal figure in cinema whose works reshaped Tamil film, especially through his depictions of rural life. In his post, he stated, "The passing of Thiru Bharathiraja Ji is very saddening. He was a towering figure of the cinema world whose works transformed Tamil cinema." He also extended his sympathies to the filmmaker's family and fans during this difficult time, concluding with a heartfelt 'Om Shanti.'


Final Farewell Arrangements

Bharathiraja's Last Rites

According to family arrangements, Bharathiraja’s cremation is set for today at approximately 3 PM at his farmhouse located near Vathalakundu in Theni district. Family members, close friends, industry colleagues, and numerous fans are expected to gather to pay their respects. In honor of the late filmmaker, the Tamil film industry has halted all shooting activities today. The Tamil Film Producers Council announced that all film and television serial productions across the state would be paused from 6 AM to 6 PM on June 11.

This decision was made to pay tribute to Bharathiraja’s immense contributions to cinema and to allow industry members to attend his final farewell. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's official account shared images of him paying homage to the legendary filmmaker, showing him visibly emotional during his visit to Bharathiraja's residence.

Over a career that spanned more than forty years, Bharathiraja revolutionized Tamil cinema with iconic films such as 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Pasumpon, and Mudhal Mariyadhai. He received six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award. Additionally, he was honored with the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema.
