Guneet Monga's Homecoming at IFFD 2026
Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga recently graced the International Film Festival of Delhi 2026 (IFFD 2026) on March 31, 2026. She led a session titled 'From Indie Roots to the Oscars.' Monga's film, The Elephant Whisperers, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. During the festival, she engaged with the media, discussing her experiences with ageism in the film industry and the significant challenges of distribution for producers.
Reflections on Indian Cinema's Global Impact
In a brief interaction with reporters, Guneet expressed her joy at being recognized by the IFFD 2026 organizers, stating, “It feels like coming home. Being honored in Delhi, where I grew up, is incredibly special.” When asked about the achievements of Indian cinema on the global stage, she emphasized the collaborative nature of these successes, noting that India is just beginning its cinematic journey.
She further stated, “I believe it’s a collective endeavor. The 2023 Oscars showcased films like RRR, All That Breathes, and The Elephant Whisperers, highlighting diverse languages and styles. India is home to extraordinary filmmakers, and we are just at the start of our journey.”
Challenges in Film Distribution
Guneet also addressed the difficulties producers face in film distribution, saying, “Distribution is indeed a challenge. To overcome it, one must be innovative and confident in storytelling. It requires additional support, and your work should resonate above all else.”
When asked about gender inequality in her role, she noted, "I have faced more ageism than gender bias. Being a young producer in this industry has its challenges. However, I take pride in my work as a woman.”
The IFFD 2026 saw the presence of numerous Bollywood stars, including Vicky Kaushal, Kangana Ranaut, Aamir Khan, and others. The festival was inaugurated by Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, along with various political figures and actors. Stay tuned for more updates!
