Nick Reiner Fights for Trust Funds Amid Murder Charges Against Parents
Nick Reiner's Legal Battle for Trust Access
Nick Reiner, the offspring of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, is currently pursuing access to a trust fund set up by his parents. He claims that these funds are crucial for his defense against allegations of their murder. In a petition submitted to a Los Angeles County court on Monday, the 32-year-old asserts that the trustees have wrongfully denied him access to the necessary funds for his legal representation. He emphasizes his love for his parents and expresses his devastation over their untimely deaths, maintaining his innocence in the ongoing legal matters.
The court documents reveal that alongside a larger family trust, Rob and Michele Reiner established individual trusts for Nick and his siblings. Nick's trust, created in 1993, reportedly included provisions for him to receive half of its assets upon reaching 30 and the remainder at 35. However, he contends that he has not received the funds due to him at age 30, and the current trustee, attorney Paul R. Kanin, has offered inconsistent reasons for withholding the money, including unsubstantiated doubts about Nick's competence.
Nick is seeking around $1.5 million from the trust, arguing that he urgently needs these funds not only for his defense but also for basic living expenses while in custody. The petition indicates that the trust contains at least $1.5 million in assets, yet Kanin has not provided a clear account of the total value, complicating Nick's situation as he faces his legal battles.
Rob and Michele Reiner were tragically murdered in their Brentwood residence on December 14, shortly before Nick's arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to two murder charges. Initially, he was represented by prominent attorney Alan Jackson, who later withdrew from the case for undisclosed reasons. The petition also notes that Nick's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to finance Jackson's legal services but later withdrew their support.
As the case progresses, Nick Reiner could potentially face the death penalty, although the District Attorney's office has not yet decided whether to pursue that route. The case remains largely confidential, with limited information available to the public regarding the tragic events surrounding Rob and Michele Reiner's deaths. Jake Reiner has described the ordeal as a "living nightmare," underscoring the deep emotional toll this tragedy has taken on the family.
