Introduction to Fanomenon

A collaboration between major entertainment companies—HYBE, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment—has led to the creation of 'Fanomenon', a groundbreaking K-pop festival and awards initiative aimed at enhancing the global presence of Korean entertainment. The inaugural Fanomenon Awards will take place in Seoul and Goyang in December 2027, followed by an international music festival reminiscent of Coachella in Los Angeles in May 2028. This initiative will not only showcase performances by K-pop artists but also celebrate influential fan communities and feature cultural exhibitions that highlight Korean cuisine, beauty, fashion, and entertainment, while promoting tourism and Korea's cultural sectors worldwide.

Event Details and Schedule

Fanomenon Date, Venue, and Schedule

The Fanomenon music festival will kick off with the Fanomenon Awards, scheduled from December 2 to December 12, 2027. This event marks the launch of a new fan-centric brand before its global expansion. The overseas festival will debut in Los Angeles in May 2028, designed as a large-scale music festival inspired by Coachella. The awards will be held at two venues in South Korea, with the main events taking place at the Seoul Arena, a new 28,000-seat concert venue set to open in May 2027 in Chang-dong, Seoul. Additional programs, exhibitions, and fan experiences will be hosted at KINTEX in Goyang. The exact venue for the Los Angeles festival is yet to be confirmed.

The awards will span 11 days, featuring performances from K-pop artists, recognition of the top 10 influential K-pop fan communities, and extensive cultural exhibitions. Headlining artists will participate in various performances throughout the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in interactive experiences that showcase Korean food, beauty, fashion, webtoons, films, television dramas, and animation. This initiative is supported by the four major entertainment companies, which are forming a joint venture to spearhead the project. Plans are also in place to establish K-culture centers in major cities worldwide, featuring large performance venues and exhibition spaces to further promote Korean entertainment and tourism.

Government Support and Economic Impact

More about Fanomenon

The South Korean government has stated that Fanomenon aims to enhance the global influence of Korean culture while boosting tourism and the entertainment sector. Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Chae Hwi-Young emphasized the importance of sustaining and expanding the global interest in Korean culture. He remarked, "Our primary goal is to create an event that attracts global attendees while earning the trust of the international entertainment industry."

To ensure the festival's success, the government will assist with immigration processes, safety management, and international promotion to draw more visitors from abroad. According to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, the Fanomenon events could attract around 520,000 attendees, including 200,000 international tourists, generating an estimated economic impact of 1 trillion won. JYP's chief creative officer Park Jin-young highlighted the need to balance public interest with commercial viability, stating, "The most important thing is that this will make money. It is impossible to attract global artists and companies to an event that does not turn a profit." While public funds will support the festival and its associated events, the concerts will be ticketed and backed by sponsorships to ensure long-term sustainability.
