Namit Malhotra Turns Down Record OTT Offer for Ramayana's Digital Rights

The highly anticipated film Ramayana, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, is being produced with a staggering budget of Rs 4000 crore. Producer Namit Malhotra recently rejected a record Rs 700 crore offer for the film's digital rights, believing it deserves a higher valuation due to its cultural significance. With plans to potentially sell the rights for Part 1 separately, Malhotra is banking on the film's theatrical success to recover the investment. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is set to release its first part during Diwali 2026 and the second part in 2027.

Overview of Ramayana's Production

The upcoming film Ramayana, featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Rama, is being developed with an impressive total budget of Rs 4000 crore for its two parts. The film's teaser was unveiled on April 2, 2025, generating significant buzz nationwide. Despite the substantial financial implications, producer Namit Malhotra remains steadfast in his vision and is not opting for a quick sale of the film's digital rights.

Namit Malhotra's Decision on OTT Deal

Why Did Ramayana Producer Namit Malhotra Reject Rs 700 Crore OTT Deal?

As reported by a leading entertainment source, Namit Malhotra was offered Rs 700 crore by an OTT platform for the digital rights of both parts of Ramayana, marking the highest OTT proposal ever made for an Indian film. However, he declined the offer promptly, believing that the film's cultural significance and scale warrant a much higher valuation.

Namit and his team are aiming for at least Rs 1000 crore for the combined OTT rights. They are optimistic that as more content from the film is released, streaming services will enhance their bids. There are indications that Namit might first sell the digital rights for Part 1 separately, retaining Part 2's rights until after the theatrical release of Part 1, a strategy previously employed by the creators of Dhurandhar.

By keeping the digital, satellite, and music rights under his control, Namit is adopting a calculated yet risky strategy, banking on Ramayana's potential to perform exceptionally well in theaters globally to recoup the substantial Rs 4000 crore investment.
