Ten years after the groundbreaking film Sairat transformed Marathi cinema, director Nagraj Manjule asserts that attempting to replicate its success is futile. The 2016 romantic tragedy not only became a cultural touchstone but also redefined the commercial viability of regional films, emerging as one of the highest-grossing Marathi films ever. While promoting his latest project, Frame, Manjule shared insights with a media outlet regarding his approach to filmmaking and whether he intentionally avoids creating another film akin to Sairat.

During the conversation, Manjule was questioned about whether the immense success of Sairat influenced his decision to steer clear of similar narratives. He firmly rejected the notion, emphasizing that he has never placed creative limitations on himself. "There was never a decision to avoid certain types of films. "We can't recreate Sairat, and honestly, there's no point in trying to," he remarked.

Insights on Sairat

Released in 2016, Sairat stands as one of the most significant films in Marathi cinema. Directed and co-produced by Nagraj Manjule, this romantic social drama marked the debut performances of Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar. The film narrates the tale of two college students from different castes whose love faces violent opposition from their families, highlighting issues of caste discrimination and honor-based violence.

Sairat premiered at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, receiving a standing ovation prior to its theatrical release on April 29, 2016. It garnered widespread critical acclaim and grossed over Rs 110 crore at the box office, becoming a sleeper hit. For several years, it held the title of the highest-grossing Marathi film until it was surpassed by Raja Shivaji in 2026. The film also received significant accolades for its performances, with Rinku Rajguru earning a National Film Award - Special Mention.
