Mortal Kombat II Set for Theatrical Release

The highly anticipated Mortal Kombat II, marking the fourth chapter in the live-action series, is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on May 8, 2026. Based on the iconic video game franchise, this film is creating a lot of excitement and aims to become the top-grossing action film of 2026. If it performs as expected, it could exceed the current leading action film's global earnings of $53.8 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II will face competition from The Devil Wears Prada 2, which premieres a week earlier on May 1, and Hugh Jackman's comedy The Sheep Detective, releasing on the same day. Although these films cater to different audiences, they will still influence the competitive dynamics at the box office. Earlier this year, the Chinese martial arts film Blades of the Guardians set a high standard with its global performance.

To surpass Blades of the Guardians, which grossed $203.4 million worldwide, Mortal Kombat II will need to achieve impressive earnings. Current industry forecasts indicate that the film could earn between $40 million and $50 million domestically during its opening weekend. The previous installment, released in 2021, had a nearly equal split between domestic and international earnings, suggesting that if the sequel follows suit, it could potentially achieve a global opening weekend of $80-100 million.

However, to exceed the $200 million threshold and outpace Blades of the Guardians, Mortal Kombat II must sustain strong box office momentum for at least three to four weeks following its debut. The film's ultimate box office success will become clearer after its release on May 8. The storyline is expected to center around Johnny Cage, portrayed by Karl Urban, along with other beloved characters as they confront Shao Kahn and his powerful warriors.

The cast features Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Tati Gabrielle, among others. As excitement builds for this martial arts fantasy film, industry experts are eager to see how it will fare in a competitive box office landscape.
