Meryl Streep to Skip Met Gala 2026 Amid Controversy
Meryl Streep's Absence at Met Gala 2026
The highly anticipated sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, featuring Meryl Streep as a fictionalized version of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, was released on May 1, just ahead of the prestigious Met Gala 2026. While co-stars Emily Blunt and Simone Ashley are expected to grace the event, Streep, portraying the iconic Miranda Priestly, will not be attending.
Reports indicate that Streep's decision to skip the gala is linked to the involvement of Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who are co-chairs for this year's event. Their company, Amazon, is also the main sponsor. The theme for this year's Met Gala is "Fashion Is Art," but the couple has faced criticism, with many accusing them of purchasing their invitations. This has led to calls for a boycott from various celebrities.
Meryl Streep's Statement on the Met Gala
According to a report from The Hollywood Report, Streep's absence is a form of protest against Bezos' participation. In New York, signs reading 'Boycott the Bezos Met Ball' have been prevalent for weeks, and even New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced he will not attend. Zendaya, who has been a regular at the gala for the past seven years, is also opting out this time.
While Lady Gaga, who has a cameo in the sequel, remains unconfirmed for the gala, Streep's representative has confirmed her invitation. The statement highlighted that although she has been invited multiple times in the past, she has never attended, stating, "While she appreciates Vogue, Anna, and her incredible imagination and stamina, it has never quite been her scene."
