Meiyang Chang's New Role in 'Taarkata'

Meiyang Chang, recognized for his roles in films such as Badmaash Company and Sultan, has recently made his debut in a Bengali series titled Taarkata. This action thriller, directed by Samik Roy Choudhury, premiered on ZEE5 on June 12. Following its launch, Meiyang shared insights about his experiences while filming the series during an exclusive interview with Zoom. In Taarkata, he portrays a formidable antagonist named Dodo. Reflecting on the challenges he encountered, Meiyang discussed the difficulties he faced on the first day of shooting.

Meiyang Chang on His Bengali Monologue in 'Taarkata'

In his conversation with us, Meiyang Chang revealed that the initial day of filming for Taarkata was particularly challenging due to the numerous Bengali dialogues he had to deliver. He aimed to perfect his pronunciation and intonation, opting to avoid dubbing. "I wanted to nail it on set because I strongly believe in capturing the authentic sound and the natural interactions that occur during filming. If dubbing is the only option, then it’s understandable. However, I was a bit anxious on the first day because I had requested the director not to let that happen. Unfortunately, due to scheduling and location issues, I ended up with the longest Bengali monologue on the very first day," Chang explained.

He further elaborated that once filming begins, actors tend to become more comfortable with the language, gaining clarity on their strengths and weaknesses. "If this monologue had come on the third or fourth day, or even later, it wouldn’t have been a problem because I would have been more accustomed to the process. But it came on the first day, and it was scheduled to be the last shot of the day. When I arrived on set, I learned that we were running about three hours behind schedule. This meant I would likely only get two or three takes for this scene before the crew had to leave," he added.

Despite these obstacles, Meiyang successfully delivered the monologue in just two takes, thanks to his preparation and the support from his colleagues. "I consider that a significant achievement for myself," he remarked.

Featuring Vikram Chatterjee and Priyanka Sarkar alongside Meiyang, Taarkata tells the story of an ex-police officer grappling with memory loss as he investigates the murder of a don's son. The series consists of seven episodes and is currently available for streaming on ZEE5.
