Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige disclosed that Jonsson's casting was finalized months prior to the public announcement, following a confidential meeting with Coogler. Feige noted that the director was convinced Jonsson was the right fit after their private encounter, dubbing him the next Black Panther.

Feige shared insights on how David Jonsson secured one of the pivotal roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with Empire, he explained that Ryan Coogler had already identified Jonsson as the perfect successor to the Black Panther legacy before Marvel initiated its casting process. "We hadn't started a search yet," Feige recounted, mentioning that Coogler was preoccupied with another project, and discussions for Black Panther 3 were not expected to commence until after the film's awards season.

However, Coogler surprised Feige with a call, stating, 'I found him.' When Feige inquired further, Coogler revealed, 'He's this guy, David Jonsson.' Feige elaborated that Coogler had organized a 'secret meeting' with Jonsson at a hotel, expressing his strong belief that he had discovered Wakanda's next hero. Feige recalled Coogler's conviction, saying, "He's the guy... I felt it in my soul. He's a good man, and he is the next Black Panther." This conversation left Feige with 'chills,' and Marvel managed to keep the casting news under wraps for nearly six months.

During its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel confirmed that David Jonsson will take on the role of Prince T'Challa II, the son of the late King T'Challa. The upcoming film will explore the young prince's journey of self-discovery as he embraces his heritage and prepares to become Wakanda's protector.

Ryan Coogler will return as the director, with Letitia Wright and Winston Duke reprising their roles as Shuri and M'Baku, respectively. Wright took on the Black Panther mantle in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever after the passing of Chadwick Boseman, whose portrayal of T'Challa is regarded as one of Marvel's most iconic performances. Black Panther 3 is set for a global theatrical release on December 15, 2028, continuing the legacy of the franchise that saw the original 2018 film gross over $1.3 billion worldwide and receive seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
