Marissa Bode's Shocking Experience: Denied Boarding Due to Disability
Marissa Bode's Disturbing Flight Experience
Marissa Bode, known for her role in Wicked, recently drew attention after revealing her distressing experience of being barred from boarding a Southern Airways flight because of her wheelchair. In a viral TikTok video, she detailed how airline staff prevented her from boarding, citing the need for passengers to navigate stairs. Bode condemned this practice as discriminatory and raised important questions about the aviation industry's approach to accessibility. Although the airline's policy specifies such limitations for smaller aircraft, she had received prior assurances that her travel needs would be accommodated, intensifying concerns about how airlines treat disabled individuals.
Details of the Incident
In her TikTok post, Bode stated, "I was denied boarding a flight because I’m disabled.” She lamented, “I wish that were clickbait. I wish that were false, but that is what happened." She recounted difficulties in locating her virtual ticket before her flight to Pennsylvania. Upon requesting help from the crew, she was informed that her wheelchair prevented her from boarding the plane.
“The two staff members at the gate asked me, ‘Can you stand?’ I replied, ‘No.’ They then said, ‘I’m sorry, but because of that, we’re going to have to deny you boarding.’ Marissa described the situation as shocking, noting that they explained all planes operated by this airline require stairs for boarding. She stressed that individuals with disabilities should not be overlooked and questioned why airlines do not adapt their aircraft to accommodate disabled passengers. Marissa characterized this incident as “blatant discrimination.”
According to the airline’s policies, passengers must be able to ascend and descend steps to board their planes. Additionally, since their aircraft accommodate 28 passengers or fewer, they are not obligated to provide wheelchair lifts, which are typically required under the Air Carrier Access Act. However, Bode mentioned that her manager had previously confirmed with the airline that she would be able to board without any issues. For context, she has relied on a wheelchair since a car accident at the age of 11.
Marissa Bode is celebrated for her pioneering role as Nessarose Thropp in the Wicked film adaptations, making history as the first disabled actress to take on this character. The musical fantasy film also stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and others. In addition to her film work, she has appeared in various theater productions, including Little Shop of Horrors and Peter Pan. Bode is also a strong advocate for the representation of individuals with disabilities and for LGBTQIA+ rights.
