Marissa Bode, known for her role in Wicked, recently made headlines after sharing her distressing experience of being denied boarding on a Southern Airways flight due to her wheelchair use. In a TikTok video that gained significant attention, Bode recounted how airline personnel stopped her from boarding, citing the aircraft's limitations that require passengers to ascend stairs. She criticized this policy as discriminatory and raised concerns about the lack of accessibility in the aviation industry. Despite the airline's contract outlining such restrictions for smaller planes, Bode claimed she had received prior assurances regarding her travel arrangements, highlighting ongoing issues regarding how airlines accommodate passengers with disabilities.

In her TikTok post, Bode stated, "I was denied boarding a flight because I’m disabled. I wish that were clickbait. I wish that were false, but that is what happened." She explained that she faced challenges in finding her virtual ticket before her flight to Pennsylvania. When she sought assistance from the crew, they informed her that she could not board due to her wheelchair. Bode recalled, "The two people at the gate looked at me and asked, ‘Can you stand?’ I replied, ‘No.’ They then said, ‘I’m sorry, but because of that, we’re going to have to deny you boarding.’" She described the incident as shocking and noted that the airline staff explained that all their planes require passengers to navigate stairs. Bode emphasized that individuals with disabilities should not be overlooked and questioned why airlines do not make necessary adjustments to accommodate them. She expressed that this experience exemplified “blatant discrimination.”
According to the airline's policies, passengers must be capable of climbing steps to board the aircraft. Furthermore, since their planes accommodate 28 passengers or fewer, they are not mandated to provide wheelchair lifts, as typically required under the Air Carrier Access Act. However, Bode mentioned that her manager had previously confirmed with the airline that she would be able to fly without any complications.
