Renowned Malayalam film star Mammootty has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Mahatma Gandhi University located in Kottayam. This prestigious Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degree acknowledges his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema over a career that spans more than fifty years. The accolade was presented by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar during the university's graduation ceremony, which was attended by various ministers, members of the academic council, and other dignitaries. This honor marks the third honorary doctorate for Mammootty, who previously received similar accolades from the University of Calicut and the University of Kerala in 2010.

The actor was honored with the D.Litt degree during a special graduation event in Kottayam, with the presentation made by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar. The university recognized Mammootty for his significant impact on Indian cinema across various languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English. This latest honorary doctorate is not Mammootty's first. In 2010, he was awarded Doctor of Letters degrees by both the University of Calicut and the University of Kerala. At that time, the citation referred to him as the “star of all stars,” commending his versatility in roles ranging from Ponthanmada to his portrayal of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It was also noted that he was once a student at the university.

Born Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail, Mammootty is one of India's most celebrated actors, having received numerous prestigious awards, including three National Film Awards and multiple Kerala State Film Awards.
