In a notable legal and political turn of events, the Madras High Court has provided a significant reprieve to Udanidi Stalin, a key opposition leader and member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. On Tuesday, the court mandated that the police grant him station bail on the same day following his detention for questioning related to a contentious statement made during a protest. This ruling came after an urgent hearing regarding his anticipatory bail request, which was prompted by his apprehension at his Chennai home and subsequent transport to Thanjavur for interrogation.

During the court session, representatives from the Tamil Nadu government assured the judges that there were no intentions to pursue judicial custody for Udanidi. The Advocate General clarified that his transfer to the Thanjavur East police station was solely for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation. Justice J.K. Elanti Rea, acknowledging the government's commitment, instructed the police to expedite the inquiry and ensure Udanidi's release on station bail by day's end. The court also urged the DMK leader to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Earlier that day, dramatic scenes unfolded outside Udanidi's home as a significant number of police officers arrived to detain him. Family members, including his wife, reportedly confronted the police during the operation, leading to protests from DMK supporters throughout Tamil Nadu, who demanded the withdrawal of all charges against their leader. While being escorted into a police vehicle, Udanidi asserted that the actions against him were politically motivated, stating, "Did I say anything wrong? Did I take anyone's name other than the chief ministers? I will fight this legally."

The controversy originated from a speech Udanidi delivered during a protest in Thanjavur regarding a water dispute. During the event, some attendees began chanting the name of actress Trisha Krishnan, which led Udanidi to make a remark that the ruling Tamil Nadu government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) deemed inappropriate. An FIR was subsequently lodged against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
