Who Was Bonnie Tyler?
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, Tyler's rise to fame began in modest circumstances. She first gained attention in 1969 when her aunt entered her into a local talent contest, where she finished as a runner-up. This experience inspired her to pursue a music career, initially as a backing vocalist for Bobby Wayne & the Dixies before forming her own band, Imagination. To distinguish herself from Welsh folk singer Mary Hopkin, she briefly used the stage name Sherene Davis before ultimately adopting Bonnie Tyler. Her big break came in 1977 when talent scout Roger Bell discovered her in a Swansea nightclub. That year, she released her debut single Lost in France, but it was It's a Heartache that catapulted her to international fame, reaching No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Tyler's career reached new heights in 1983 with the release of Total Eclipse of the Heart, a dramatic rock ballad that topped charts in both the UK and the US, making her the first Welsh artist to achieve a No. 1 single in America. Over four decades later, this song remains one of the greatest power ballads ever, recently surpassing one billion streams on Spotify, proving its timeless appeal. Throughout her illustrious career, Tyler produced numerous hits, including Holding Out for a Hero and Here She Comes, earning three Grammy nominations and three Brit Award nominations. In recognition of her contributions to music, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022. Her signature songs, Total Eclipse of the Heart and It's a Heartache, have each sold over six million copies globally.
Bonnie Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage.
