Filmmaker Bharathiraja, renowned for his iconic phrase, "Yen Iniya Tamil Makkale...", has sadly passed away at the age of 84. His health had significantly declined following the tragic loss of his son, actor Manoj Bharathiraja, who died from a cardiac arrest in March 2024 at just 48 years old. Bharathiraja's Health and Cause of Death
In December of the previous year, Bharathiraja was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai's T Nagar due to respiratory issues, including wheezing. Although he recovered and was discharged, it remains uncertain if these health complications contributed to his passing. Recently, Bharathiraja's brother, Jayaraj Periyamayathevar, disclosed that the filmmaker struggled deeply with the emotional aftermath of losing his son, making it challenging for him to cope.
Celebrating Bharathiraja's Career
Bharathiraja made his directorial debut with the groundbreaking film 16 Vayathinile in 1977, which transformed rural storytelling in Tamil cinema. The film featured stars like Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Rajinikanth. Over the decades, he directed numerous acclaimed films, including Kizhake Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Kaadhal Oviyam, and Mudhal Mariyathai. With nearly 40 films to his credit, he earned the honorary title Iyakkunar Imayam for his significant contributions to Indian cinema. His Recent Works
Bharathiraja's latest directorial effort was Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal, a segment from the anthology series Modern Love Chennai. His final acting role will be in the upcoming film Pulavar. Throughout his career, he delivered memorable performances in films like Aayutha Ezhuthu, Pandianadu, Eeswaran, and Maharaja. He also made a brief appearance in the Malayalam film Thudarum. Bharathiraja's last public appearance was at his son Manoj's funeral. Prior to his passing, he watched Thaai Kizhavi while recovering from an illness, during which actress Radikaa Sarathkumar visited him. He praised her performance, suggesting it deserved a National Award, marking a touching reunion as Radikaa began her acting career in Bharathiraja's 1987 film Kizhakke Pogum Rail.

Throughout his illustrious career, Bharathiraja became one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema. He received six National Film Awards, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award.
