Legal Dispute Arises Over 'Oye Oye' in Dhurandhar: The Revenge
Legal Issues Surrounding Dhurandhar: The Revenge
The production team behind Dhurandhar: The Revenge has found itself in a legal predicament due to the unauthorized use of the popular song Tirchi Topiwala (Oye Oye) from the film Tridev. Rajiv Rai, the director of Trimurti Films, has initiated legal action against Jio Studios and Aditya Dhar’s B26 Studios, claiming they have used his iconic track without permission. Rai has gone as far as to label the situation as "robbery" in various media discussions. Recently, the parties involved were unable to come to an agreement regarding the copyright issue, despite the court's previous suggestion for mediation.
Update on the Oye Oye Copyright Case
As reported by Bar and Bench, attempts to resolve the copyright conflict between Trimurti Films and the creators of Dhurandhar 2 have not been successful. Trimurti asserts that it holds the rights to the original song and has accused the new film's team of using it without a proper license. They have raised concerns about the song being utilized for promotional activities, theatrical releases, and digital platforms, deeming it a copyright infringement. On the other hand, Super Cassettes Industries Limited, which possesses the music rights for Dhurandhar 2, contends that Trimurti has not been entirely forthcoming with the court, citing previous instances where songs from Tridev were used in other films without issue. The makers of Dhurandhar have indicated that the film has already been released in theaters and is not anticipated to debut on OTT platforms until mid-May.
Future Proceedings
With mediation efforts having failed, the court will revisit the case. Reports indicate that the next hearing is set for May 8.
Accusations from Tridev's Director
Rajiv Rai has expressed strong feelings about the situation, stating, "This is a theft. Yeh poori chori ban jaati hai. Aur aap isko dusri picture mein dalte hai alter kar ke, toh woh double chori hai," as quoted by DNA India. Last month, the Delhi High Court had advised both parties to refrain from escalating the conflict. After labeling the Dhurandhar 2 creators as "thieves" for their use of Oye Oye, Rai assured the court that he would limit his media comments. The court has documented this assurance and instructed both sides to exercise restraint.
So far, the creators of Dhurandhar have not made any public statements regarding the ongoing situation.
