A New Era for Kelvin Cinema

Kelvin Cinema, a historic venue in Assam, has embarked on an exciting new journey. Established in 1935 by Jeevanram Goenka in the vibrant Fancy Bazar area of Guwahati, this iconic cinema is now reimagined for modern audiences while honoring its rich heritage.

After nearly ninety years, Kelvin has evolved into Kelvin Gold Cinema, which recently opened a state-of-the-art two-screen multiplex within the original Kelvin premises. This new facility boasts a total seating capacity of 499, including 24 luxurious recliners, and features a sleek, contemporary design equipped with cutting-edge cinematic technology.

The grand opening of Kelvin Gold Cinema took place on November 3, attended by notable figures such as CMD NED-Fi PVSLN Murty, renowned film analyst and media figure Komal Nahta, and various dignitaries from the Assamese film industry, including Ravi Sarma, Zerifa Wahid, and Jahnu Barua.

The Goenka family has been instrumental in shaping the cultural and business landscape of Assam. Following their initial success in Shillong, they ventured into cinema exhibition, establishing Kelvin as a landmark venue. The cinema has hosted numerous Assamese film premieres and Hindi film jubilees, introducing audiences to innovative technologies.

Kelvin Cinema's history is filled with memorable milestones that evoke a sense of nostalgia. It famously recorded a remarkable 53-week run of 'Jai Santoshi Maa' and was the first cinema in Guwahati to screen English films, attracting large crowds for classics like 'Ben Hur' and 'The Ten Commandments.' For many film enthusiasts, Kelvin was more than just a cinema; it was a cultural hub that expanded the city's cinematic horizons. Shankar Lall Goenka, a key figure in the Kelvin legacy, expressed that the reopening is both an emotional and thrilling experience for the family. He remarked, "Kelvin has been a part of countless memories. Reviving it in a modern format feels like continuing a legacy while creating something fresh for today's audience."

"The enthusiastic reception from young moviegoers and families indicates that Kelvin still holds a cherished place in Guwahati's heart," he added.

The newly launched Kelvin Gold Cinema features advanced Christie 2K Laser projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, Pulz IsoWave audio systems, and immersive 3D capabilities. The recliners are designed for comfort, offering on-seat food and beverage service, USB charging ports, and generous legroom. Guests can also enjoy an expanded selection of snacks, drinks, and combo meals, catering to both indulgent and healthier preferences. With ample parking and convenient access, the venue aims to attract families and film enthusiasts from all over Guwahati.

Ratan Jain, the director of Gold Cinema, stated that Kelvin Gold Cinema aspires to provide a regal movie experience to the community once again. Gold Cinema Director Hasmukh Shah emphasized the aim to create an urban entertainment space that resonates with contemporary viewers. The multiplex was officially launched on Wednesday.
