KC Bokadia Calls for Change: How Actor Entourages Are Impacting Film Budgets
Veteran Filmmaker's Perspective on Rising Costs
Renowned filmmaker KC Bokadia has shared his insights on the ongoing discussion surrounding the increasing expenses associated with actor entourages and their effects on film budgets. In a recent conversation, the director, celebrated for his contributions during the 1980s and 1990s, pointed out a troubling trend where producers find themselves overwhelmed by the personal costs linked to their leading stars and their teams.
Bokadia specifically acknowledged the professionalism exhibited by industry legends like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Rajinikanth. He noted that these actors have consistently ensured that their personal staff do not become a financial burden on producers. He encouraged newer actors to adopt this level of professionalism to help ease the financial pressures currently faced by many film projects.
Concerns Over Production Expenses and Actor Demands
The filmmaker voiced his worries regarding the evolving expectations on modern film sets, highlighting that it has become increasingly common for actors to demand multiple vanity vans for different uses. He reminisced about his experiences with actor Jackie Shroff, who was unfazed by his accommodation arrangements during a shoot in Chennai, opting for a standard room instead of a suite. Bokadia lamented that such adaptability is becoming a rarity in today's industry.
In addition to the demand for numerous vanity vans, Bokadia pointed out the escalating daily wages of crew members and personal staff as a major contributor to rising budgets. He described the current rates as astonishing, revealing that even basic support staff, such as managers, can command daily fees ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh. He expressed his discontent over requests for specialized amenities, like gym-equipped vans, instead of standard facilities.
In his message to the industry, Bokadia urged actors to take accountability for their entourage expenses rather than shifting those costs onto production houses. He stressed that the future of film production relies on a more thoughtful approach from talent, warning that the ongoing trend of increasing costs could lead to severe financial challenges for producers down the line. Bokadia, known for directing films like Aaj Ka Arjun and Lal Baadshah, continues to be a significant voice addressing the logistical and financial hurdles of contemporary filmmaking.
