Kara: Dhanush's Latest Film Struggles at the Box Office Despite Star-Studded Cast
Kara's Release and Initial Reception
The film Kara, featuring Dhanush in the lead role, premiered in theaters on April 30. Unfortunately, it has received a mixed reception from Tamil cinema enthusiasts and has seen a disappointing start at the box office, despite the high hopes surrounding its release. The movie boasts a cast that includes several National Award winners and a Padma Shri honoree, which raised expectations for Dhanush's continued success following the pandemic. However, the box office figures suggest that these expectations were not met. Directed by Vignesh Raja, Kara is a heist thriller set in the early 1990s and marks Dhanush's 54th film. The screenplay was co-written by Alfred Prakash.

Kara: Dhanush’s Film Gets Lowest Post-Pandemic Opening Despite Prestigious Award-Winning Cast
As reported by Sacnilk, Kara earned a net of Rs 5.75 crore in India on its first day. The total domestic gross reached Rs 6.64 crore, with overseas markets contributing an additional Rs 2.50 crore. The Tamil version led the way with Rs 4.65 crore, achieving a 27% occupancy across 2,866 screenings. The Telugu version, however, only managed Rs 1.10 crore with a lower occupancy of 20% from 1,306 shows. Overall, the occupancy rate across all languages was 24.8% on the opening day.
In comparison, Dhanush's previous film, Idli Kadai, opened with Rs 11 crore, making Kara's opening day performance only about 30% of that figure. This film has also fallen short of Naane Varuvean, which previously held the record for Dhanush's lowest post-COVID opening. Among his recent films, Raayan stands out with the highest collection of Rs 13.7 crore.
Idli Kadai, his next directorial venture, grossed Rs 11 crore, while other films like Vaathi, Captain Miller, and Thiruchitrambalam earned Rs 9.7 crore, Rs 8.8 crore, and Rs 8.25 crore, respectively. Kara's performance places it as a softer entry in Dhanush's filmography. The narrative follows a former thief who is drawn back into crime when a bank attempts to seize his ancestral property.
