Jamie Bell Cast as Duke Shelby in Upcoming Peaky Blinders Spinoff

The anticipated spinoff of Peaky Blinders will feature Jamie Bell stepping into the role of Duke Shelby, continuing the legacy of the Shelby family. He is the third actor to portray Tommy Shelby's (Cillian Murphy) illegitimate son, following Conrad Khan and Barry Keoghan. Fans have expressed surprise at this casting change, especially since Barry was previously seen as the next Shelby generation in the Netflix film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which premiered on March 20. This new series is a collaboration between BBC and Netflix, also featuring Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things.

New Adventures of the Shelby Family in the Spinoff

The Shelbys are making a comeback, with Duke Shelby leading the charge in this new series set to air on Netflix and BBC. Jamie Bell, known for his roles in Rocketman and Billy Elliott, has had his first look as Duke revealed. In The Immortal Man, Duke reconnects with his estranged father, and together they confront a Nazi threat in their hometown during the 1940s. The upcoming series will take place in the 1950s, a decade after the events of the film.

The show has already been confirmed for two seasons, with additional cast members including Jessica Brown Findlay from Downton Abbey and Lashana Lynch from The Day of the Jackal. Lucy Karczewski will be making her television debut in this spinoff. In the UK, the series will debut on BBC, while it will be accessible on Netflix internationally. According to a press release from the BBC, the narrative will delve into the post-World War Two landscape in Birmingham, showcasing a Duke who is "older, wiser, more ambitious, and more dangerous." Details about the remaining cast members have yet to be disclosed. Tommy also has another son, Charlie, with his late wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis), who was shown to have gone off to fight in WWII in the film.

Additional Peaky Blinders Series in Development

In addition to the Duke-focused series, another Peaky Blinders show is in the works, although specifics are still under wraps. The recasting of Barry Keoghan just 13 days after the release of The Immortal Man has raised eyebrows, particularly as he is currently busy portraying Ringo Starr in a series of biopics about The Beatles directed by Sam Mendes.

Notably, Bell is approximately seven years older than Keoghan, who initially portrayed Duke in Peaky Blinders Season 6 when the character was first introduced.
