Emotional AI Tribute in Carry On Jatta 4

The upcoming film Carry On Jatta 4 is poised to astonish viewers with a heartfelt tribute to the late actor Jaswinder Bhalla. In a recent conversation with Zoom, Gippy Grewal disclosed that the production team utilized Artificial Intelligence (AI) to recreate Bhalla’s cherished on-screen persona following his death. Grewal described the choice as both daring and emotional, noting that there were initial thoughts of canceling the film, as the franchise felt incomplete without Mr. Bhalla. However, after discussions with his family and obtaining their approval, the filmmakers decided to honor this iconic character using AI, CGI, and VFX technology, thereby adding a distinctive new layer to the comedy series.

Gippy Grewal Discusses AI Implementation

In his interview with Zoom, Gippy Grewal explained that the integration of AI was not part of the original plan for Carry On Jatta 4. He stated, “For the first time, we have created someone from A.I. and brought him in the film,” emphasizing that the absence of the character was profoundly felt during production. Grewal elaborated that the late actor's presence was always intended to be integral to the narrative. “We were working, so we knew that he will be Mr. Bhalla. So, he will come in the film. We used to miss him. So, it will be a new thing for the audience,” he remarked. He also mentioned that Carry On Jatta 4 introduces a novel “ghost flavour,” where the character’s spirit becomes part of the plot, creating “a new world” within the franchise.

Reflecting on the emotional hurdles, Grewal admitted that the team even contemplated scrapping the project. “Once, we dropped the idea of making the film. Everyone started saying, how can we do it without Mr. Bhalla? Because he was such an iconic actor,” he shared. He expressed that casting another actor in Bhalla’s role would not have been appropriate. “Even if a good actor comes, people will abuse him. It is not good,” he added. The actor-producer also recognized the ethical discussions surrounding AI in filmmaking. "I think that the AI that has been used, there was a risk in it. But I can understand that you needed it. You took permissions and did it in a way. But I think there is a lot of discussion about AI. To what extent an artist should use AI. Because in today’s date, the use of AI is wrong. We never thought that we will use it. Never,” he stated.

Nonetheless, Grewal emphasized that the project proceeded only after receiving consent from Jaswinder Bhalla’s family. “So, we thought, let’s talk to his family. Let’s use Mr. Bhalla’s voice. We talked to aunty. She said, ‘I want to see if you can make it.’ So, we created him,” he revealed. Despite the inherent risks, Grewal believes that the emotional connection made the decision worthwhile. “It doesn’t matter what is new or old. It should be good. Films are made in two ways — good or bad. The thing that looks good, that is good. So, the film should be good,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Carry On Jatta 4, the eagerly awaited fourth chapter of the beloved Punjabi comedy series, is set to release in theaters on June 26, 2026, and will also feature Sargun Mehta.
