Understanding the Manipur Conflict

The conflict in Manipur, which erupted on May 3, 2023, involves violent clashes between two ethnic groups: the Meitei community residing in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribes from the surrounding hills. The discord arose from disputes over tribal status and land rights. By early 2025, the violence had claimed over 260 lives and displaced around 60,000 individuals from their homes, leaving the state deeply divided along ethnic lines.
