Outcry from the Film Industry Following Police Action

A significant backlash has arisen within the Indian film community after a major police operation in New Delhi led to the arrest of numerous protesters, journalists, and political activists. This crackdown occurred just before a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar, organized by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP). The protest aimed to contest the Election Commission's intensive revision of voter regulations and to call for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged discrepancies in the updated electoral rolls.

In light of the extensive police presence, which included over 40,000 personnel and the enforcement of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, several prominent figures from the entertainment industry expressed their discontent on social media. Celebrities such as Prakash Raj, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Dadlani, and Varun Grover criticized the government's actions, viewing them as a violation of the right to protest and a threat to the democratic fabric of the nation.

Celebrity Responses to Government Actions

Actor and activist Prakash Raj shared a thought-provoking cartoon by Satish Acharya on X, questioning the limits of governmental suppression of public dissent. In a video message, he condemned the detention of young activists, asserting that the government's efforts to silence dissenting voices would ultimately fail. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and editor Apoorva Asrani also voiced their strong objections, with Asrani specifically questioning the current state of democracy following the arrests of individuals like Abhijit Dipke, Ratna Singh, and Dhruv Rathi.

Worries About Democratic Rights

Singer Vishal Dadlani pointed out the extensive security measures in place, noting that the city experienced major disruptions, including transport cancellations, to control the protest area. Other industry figures, such as comedian Varun Grover and filmmaker Shirish Kunder, ridiculed the government's apparent paranoia, suggesting that the excessive force used against citizens reflects a loss of control. Comedian Vir Das remarked that the heavy-handed approach might unintentionally amplify attention towards the cause, as discussions surrounding the Election Commission's actions and the right to peaceful assembly continue to escalate.
