Imtiaz Ali Discusses the Burning Guitar Scene

Imtiaz Ali explains Rockstar’s guitar burning scene

During a discussion with Raj Shamani on his podcast, Imtiaz Ali elaborated on the significance of the burning guitar scene in Rockstar. He described how Jordan, portrayed by Ranbir, seeks to experience pain after losing his love due to his own errors. Feeling completely numb, he desires to inflict punishment upon himself. Ali stated, “Jordan has reached a point where he can't feel anything. He is like a drug addict who requires stronger doses. To feel anything has become a challenge because he feels nothing. He is attempting to create a situation that will cause him pain.”

Symbolism of the Guitar

Imtiaz Ali emphasized that the guitar holds sacred significance for Jordan. By burning it, he aims to awaken his senses. The director explained, “He has descended into an unfeeling, hardened state. Lying in the water, he seeks to revive himself. The burning guitar symbolizes his desire to feel that pain. He wants to punish himself but struggles to do so as he remains emotionally detached.” When discussing the interplay of water and fire in this scene, Imtiaz revealed his intention to illustrate the emotional turmoil when opposites collide, aiming to convey Jordan’s suffering through a unique visual style.
