Renowned composer Ilaiyaraaja has celebrated another legal success in his ongoing battle to protect his musical copyrights. The Madras High Court has prohibited the producers of GV Prakash Kumar’s film Happy Raj from utilizing the famous track Pothuvaaga En Manasu Thangam, following Ilaiyaraaja's claim that it was included in the movie without his authorization. This ruling comes several months after the film's release and signifies a significant win for the composer in his quest to defend his artistic creations. Recently, the Delhi High Court upheld a temporary injunction against Ilaiyaraaja, restricting him from exploiting, licensing, or claiming ownership of the music from 134 films until the case is resolved.


Madras High Court's Decision on Ilaiyaraaja's Song


Ilaiyaraaja has achieved a significant copyright victory as the Madras High Court ruled in his favor regarding the dispute with GV Prakash Kumar's Happy Raj. The composer contended that the filmmakers used his classic song Pothuvaaga En Manasu Thangam from Murattu Kaalai without his permission.



According to reports, the court has barred the film's creators from using the song, despite Happy Raj having already concluded its theatrical run after its March 27 release. This ruling is viewed as another crucial victory for Ilaiyaraaja, who has persistently pursued legal action against unauthorized uses of his music, asserting that his compositions cannot be utilized without prior consent.

While courts have acknowledged Ilaiyaraaja's rights to his musical works, the label retains exclusive rights to the sound recordings and lyrics of 134 commissioned films released between 1976 and 2007, covering several iconic films in Tamil cinema, including Annakkili, 16 Vayathiniley, Kavikkuyil, Bharathi, Pallavi Anu Pallavi, Mullum Malarum, and Raaja Paarvai, among others.
