IIFA 2026: A New Era for Indian Cinema Awaits in Asia!
Exciting Developments for IIFA 2026
Mumbai: The upcoming International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) for 2026 is scheduled to take place in Asia during August and September, as announced by Andre Timmins, the founder and director of IIFA.
Timmins shared, "We will also host IIFA Utsavam in October in Telangana, while the main awards will be celebrated across multiple Asian countries. Our plans include digital awards, masterclasses, and screenings of tribute films featuring international digital stars."
In a groundbreaking move, this year will see the introduction of an international best film category, akin to the Oscars, allowing global films to compete. Timmins emphasized that production houses must apply to be considered for these awards.
The IIFA awards, organized annually by Wizcraft International, began in 2000 in London and have since been held in various cities worldwide, including Johannesburg, Singapore, and Dubai.
Timmins reiterated the core mission of IIFA, which is to celebrate Indian cinema on a global stage. As the awards recently marked their 25th year in India, maintaining an international presence remains vital.
"Cinema serves as a form of soft power. Our goal is to promote India abroad, connect stars with global audiences, and explore new avenues for collaboration and film production," he stated, highlighting the long-term vision of partnering with various countries and governments.
To further its reach, IIFA has launched several initiatives, including IIFA Connects, a monthly industry gathering in Mumbai, digital awards for streaming content, and IIFA Honours to recognize legends of the industry. Additionally, IIFA Tributes will honor artists who have passed away.
Timmins mentioned that actor Anil Kapoor might be among those recognized with IIFA honours, while a tribute for veteran actor Dharmendra is in the works, featuring screenings of his classic films like Sholay.
Reflecting on Wizcraft's history, Timmins recalled the pivotal moment of Michael Jackson's visit to India in 1996, where the pop icon performed in Mumbai and interacted with numerous Indian celebrities.
Wizcraft is also planning a screening of the film Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jackson's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, which is set to release in theaters on April 24.
Timmins fondly remembered Jackson's generosity during his visit, noting how he spent time with Balasaheb Thackeray and gifted items to orphans, leaving heartfelt messages expressing his love for India.
