The Unforeseen Success of 'Obsession'

The chilling relationship between Nikki and Bear in the horror film "Obsession" has surprisingly turned it into a worldwide phenomenon, especially in India, where it has become the top-grossing English horror film. Director Curry Barker expressed his disbelief at the enthusiastic reception from Indian viewers, which has played a crucial role in the film's triumph. With an impressive box office collection exceeding ₹78.60 crore net, "Obsession" has surpassed all previous Western horror films in the region.

In a recent discussion with Variety India, Barker reflected on the film's unexpected acclaim, admitting he never foresaw such a positive response. "I definitely did not expect Obsession to be a big hit in India. I didn’t expect it to be a big hit anywhere, really," he remarked. The director conveyed his delight in witnessing his creation resonate with audiences, stating, "We made this movie for nothing. I just can’t believe that it’s getting the recognition that it’s getting."

The remarkable success of "Obsession" has attracted the interest of prominent Hollywood studios, yet Barker remains wary of the industry's studio dynamics. He shared his personal concerns, saying, "I’m actually more nervous about myself than the studio system. I’m going to figure it out." He aims to maintain his distinctive voice and artistic vision, stressing that the film's success should not divert him from his original goals. "I really want to continue that. I don’t want the noise around the success of Obsession to get to me," he added.

The plot of "Obsession" revolves around Bear, played by Michael Johnston, a solitary romantic who has feelings for his childhood friend and coworker, Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette. Following a failed confession, Bear seeks assistance from a mysterious crystal shop, where he acquires a trinket known as the One Wish Willow. His desperate desire for Nikki's affection leads to unforeseen and eerie outcomes, emphasizing the film's themes of toxic relationships and personal agency.
