David Jonsson Cast as T'Challa's Son in Upcoming Marvel Film

Actor David Jonsson, known for his roles in "Alien Romulus" and "The Long Walk," has been officially announced as the new Black Panther, taking on the role of T'Challa's son in the anticipated film "Black Panther 3." This sequel is set to hit theaters on December 15, 2028, under the direction of Ryan Coogler. The narrative will follow Jonsson as Prince T'Challa II, now a young adult, after his initial appearance as a child in the 2022 film "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," as reported by a leading media outlet.

The exciting news was unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con, where Coogler and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige introduced Jonsson's casting. The third film is expected to explore a coming-of-age story, focusing on the young prince's journey to embrace his heritage and navigate the significant legacy left by his father, T'Challa.

Co-stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who will return as Shuri and M'Baku, were also featured during the Comic-Con presentation. Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman due to colon cancer in 2020, Wright assumed the role of Black Panther in "Wakanda Forever," where T'Challa II was first introduced as the offspring of T'Challa and Nakia.

During the panel, Feige shared details about Jonsson's casting, mentioning a "secret meeting" between Jonsson and Coogler that significantly influenced their decision. "We hadn't initiated a search yet. We were planning to meet with Ryan after the Academy Awards to start that process," Feige noted. He recounted how Coogler reached out to him post-meeting, firmly believing that Jonsson was the ideal candidate for the role.

The original "Black Panther," which premiered in 2018, was met with critical acclaim, amassing over USD 1.3 billion worldwide and receiving seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. After Boseman's death, Coogler adapted the storyline, allowing Wright to take on the mantle of her on-screen brother. Fans can anticipate Wright's return as Black Panther in the forthcoming "Avengers: Doomsday," scheduled for release on December 18.
