What to Expect from Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey': Insights from Producer Emma Thomas
Emma Thomas Unveils 'The Odyssey' at Mumbai Press Conference
During a recent press conference in Mumbai, Emma Thomas, the producer and spouse of renowned director Christopher Nolan, shared intriguing details about their forthcoming film, 'The Odyssey.' When prompted to summarize the film in three words, Thomas highlighted its thematic richness and expansive scale, which contrasted with her husband's more humorous response. The event, held on July 11, included the film's creative team, featuring actors Matt Damon and Tom Holland, who joined Nolan and Thomas to promote the project.
Thomas began her description with the term "epic," emphasizing the film's monumental scope. She elaborated, stating, "It has to be the first one. It's absolutely huge, and the story is told on the grandest scale." This choice of word underscores the film's ambitious narrative, designed for a large-format cinema experience. Her second word, "experiential," reflects her belief that the film goes beyond conventional storytelling, providing viewers with an immersive journey. "It's a big experience; it sort of really makes you feel like you're in it with the characters," she explained, showcasing the film's innovative filmmaking techniques.
The final word Thomas selected was "human," which she described as the film's most distinguishing characteristic. "As big as the movie is and as far in the past as it takes place, what really distinguishes this story for me is that it makes us identify and realize that we have more in common with these people from the past and with our fellow human beings," she articulated, emphasizing the universal themes that connect modern audiences to the ancient characters.
Nolan, on the other hand, took a lighthearted approach when asked for his three words, jokingly stating, "That's much better than my three words, which are Matt, Tom and Anne," referring to his lead cast members. Damon portrays Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway plays his wife Penelope, and Holland takes on the role of their son Telemachus, who aspires to lead in his father's absence.
On July 10, the team delighted fans at a special screening of 'The Odyssey' in Mumbai, where both Damon and Holland expressed their appreciation for the enthusiastic reception from Indian audiences. Holland remarked, "No one brings an energy to a movie theatre like India," while Damon acknowledged the significance of the moment, stating, "This is the first real audience we have been in front of that's seen the film." Following their time in Mumbai, the promotional tour will continue with stops in New York City, Beijing, and Seoul, leading up to the film's global release on July 17.
