What Surprising Changes Shaped the Opening of DC's Supergirl?

The latest DC film, Supergirl, underwent significant changes during its development, particularly in its opening scene. As the creative team refined the narrative, they aimed to present Kara Zor-El as the central character, allowing audiences to connect with her story directly. This article delves into the reasons behind the changes and how Ruthye's perspective continues to influence the film's narrative. Discover how these creative decisions shaped the final version of Supergirl, now showing in theaters.

A New Beginning for Supergirl

The latest installment in the DC Universe, Supergirl, almost kicked off with a completely different opening scene. Screenwriter Ana Nogueira revealed that the film underwent significant creative changes during its development, resulting in a fresh introduction for Milly Alcock's character, Kara Zor-El. While the final cut presents one storyline, the original script featured a beginning that was more in line with the acclaimed comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Nogueira recently shared insights into this transformation and the creative team's vision for the film's opening.

Why the Opening Scene Was Altered

Nogueira explained that the initial draft of Supergirl started by introducing Ruthye Marye Knoll before the audience met Kara Zor-El. However, as the project evolved, the creative team decided to change the film's opening, leading to a different introduction in the final version. In her conversation with Variety, Nogueira stated, "In the original script, we began with Ruthye's introduction. But we realized that comic book fans are already familiar with Supergirl, so they would be comfortable meeting her through another character's perspective."

She further explained that while comic enthusiasts know Kara's backstory well, the general audience may not share that familiarity. "Unlike Batman, whose origin story has been retold numerous times, Supergirl's narrative isn't as widely recognized. I've seen Spider-Man's beginnings multiple times, but we lack that for her," Nogueira noted. The filmmakers aimed to establish a direct connection between the audience and Kara from the outset, rather than through Ruthye's perspective. "We realized it was essential to present (Kara) as the film's focal point, rather than just through Ruthye's viewpoint," she added.

Keeping Ruthye's Perspective Alive

Even though the film diverges from the narrative style of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the team made sure that Ruthye's admiration for Kara remained a key element of the story. Nogueira remarked, "We wanted to maintain the sense of awe that this young girl feels while witnessing this extraordinary woman and aspiring for more from her. There's a part of (Kara) that hasn't fully realized her potential, so we aimed to keep that essence while eliminating Ruthye's voice-over." Although Ruthye no longer narrates the film, her perspective continues to shape the narrative, allowing viewers to experience Kara's journey through the eyes of someone who admires her yet acknowledges her flaws.
