What Makes 'Obsession' the Highest-Grossing Horror Film Ever?
Unprecedented Success of 'Obsession'
Film lovers are enthralled by the eerie relationship between Nikki and Bear in the new horror flick, "Obsession," produced by Focus Features and Blumhouse. This film has achieved an astonishing global box office total of $286.5 million, making it the highest-grossing film ever acquired at a film festival. It has surpassed the previous record held by "The Blair Witch Project," which earned $248.6 million after being picked up for over $1 million at the Sundance Film Festival back in 1999.
Directed by Curry Barker, "Obsession" was made on a relatively small budget of around $750,000, yet it has become a historic box office triumph. The film has defied typical horror patterns by experiencing consecutive weekend revenue growth, solidifying its position as the most lucrative film acquisition in history. Featuring performances by Indie Navarrette and Michael Johnston, "Obsession" has consistently outperformed its opening weekend earnings of $17.1 million for four weeks in a row, even eclipsing the total earnings of Blumhouse and Universal's Oscar-winning film "Get Out," which concluded its run at $259.9 million.
Jason Blum, the founder of Blumhouse Productions, has reportedly earned around $17 million in box office bonuses as an executive producer instrumental in marketing "Obsession." The film was independently produced by Under the Shell, Tea Shop Productions, and Capstone Pictures, and it made its debut in the midnight section of last year's Toronto International Film Festival before being acquired by Focus Features for $15 million.
Blum joined the project as an executive producer shortly after its acquisition, implementing a bonus structure that awarded $2 million once the film crossed $25 million in domestic earnings. Additionally, Blumhouse Atomic receives an extra $500,000 for every additional $5 million earned thereafter. This bonus structure has significantly boosted Blum's earnings, surpassing those of Barker and producer Haley Nicole Johnson, according to sources.
Insiders suggest that Capstone Pictures is expected to earn between $45 million and $50 million from "Obsession," with profits shared among the creative team, including Barker. Furthermore, Focus Features is projected to make around $125 million from the film, underscoring the extraordinary financial success of this horror sensation.
