Exciting Developments on 'Varanasi'

The highly anticipated film 'Varanasi', starring Mahesh Babu alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas, is slated to hit theaters in April 2027. Directed by the acclaimed SS Rajamouli, known for his work on 'Baahubali', the film has been generating significant excitement since its announcement. Rajamouli has been actively sharing updates about this ambitious project on social media. Recently, he participated in a masterclass at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, where he provided fresh insights about 'Varanasi'. During the event, he confirmed that the film will stand alone and will not be part of a franchise.

Insights from SS Rajamouli on 'Varanasi'

Taking a brief hiatus from filming 'Varanasi', Rajamouli attended the festival in Europe, where his previous works, 'RRR' and 'Eega', were showcased. He elaborated on the film's narrative, which centers around a poignant father-son relationship. Rajamouli described the cinematic experience as one that will transport viewers to the icy landscapes of Antarctica, infused with elements from the Ramayana, natural calamities, and fantastical components. He emphasized that the emotional core of the film revolves around the bond between father and son, stating, “The Gods of Ramayana, the natural disasters and fantastic elements. That’s the experience you are going to have, but at the core of all this is the emotions of father and son. All this makes Varanasi for you.”

When questioned about the possibility of a two-part release, Rajamouli clarified that 'Varanasi' will be a singular film. Additionally, his father, veteran writer Vijayendra Prasad, mentioned that the film will feature an extensive 30-minute battle sequence between Rama and Kumbhakarna, drawing inspiration from the Ramayana. Notably, Rajamouli's previous film, 'RRR', achieved blockbuster status at the box office.
