First Look at 'The Social Reckoning'

The first teaser for Aaron Sorkin's upcoming film, The Social Reckoning, has been unveiled, showcasing Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. Strong takes over the role from Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed the Meta founder in the 2010 film The Social Network. This new project, which Sorkin both wrote and directed, is described as a "companion piece" and features The Bear's Jeremy Allen White and Anora's Mikey Madison, who play characters revealing Facebook's controversial practices. The nearly two-and-a-half-minute teaser hints that this film could be a strong contender during the upcoming awards season.

Teaser Highlights

The teaser opens with the line, "Every revolution begins with a reckoning." The narrative is based on true events, focusing on former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen, played by Oscar winner Madison, who has a private discussion with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, portrayed by Emmy winner White. Haugen expresses her intention to help Facebook rather than harm it, possessing crucial information that needs to be shared. She ultimately breaches her NDA to disclose significant internal documents about the company's operations.

In the teaser, Strong's Zuckerberg is depicted preparing for further legal battles as the Wall Street Journal gears up for a major investigation into Facebook's effects on users, especially teenagers. White's character, Jeff, comments, "This company and that individual are playing an unprecedented role in our lives." Sorkin's film draws inspiration from the 2021 investigative series The Facebook Files, which scrutinized the social media platform's impact on youth and its role in spreading misinformation that has contributed to political turmoil.

Cast and Production Details

The cast of The Social Reckoning also includes Wunmi Mosaku from Sinners, Betty Gilpin from Office Romance, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr. The film's score is composed by Alexandre Desplat, with Jeff Cronenweth as the cinematographer. During CinemaCon earlier this year, Sorkin expressed that he felt compelled to create this follow-up due to Facebook's profound societal impact, stating, "So it’s time to say more." He characterized the film as a true David and Goliath story.

Sorkin previously won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Social Network, which grossed $226 million worldwide and earned three Academy Awards. The film, featuring Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, was also nominated for Best Picture and was directed by David Fincher.
