Sharon Stone Opens Up About Her Ex-Husband's Reaction to Her Life-Saving Surgery
Sharon Stone Discusses Her Health Journey
Actress Sharon Stone recently revealed her ex-husband's response to her decision to have a bilateral mastectomy, a choice made after a significant breast tumor was discovered. In a candid conversation on David Begnaud's podcast, "The Person Who Believed in Me," Stone shared the moment her doctor recommended surgery due to the tumor's alarming size and potential cancer risk. "One of them was larger than my entire left breast," she noted, highlighting the urgency of the situation as her doctor urged her to act swiftly.
At first, Stone struggled to accept the idea of having cancer. "I don't have cancer," she insisted to her doctor, who replied, "You don't get to decide that." Stone, however, stood her ground, asserting, "I do get to decide that. I'm deciding. But I am deciding that I will have a bilateral, because I'm not...around." This strong resolve faced significant pushback from her then-husband, who was incredulous about her choice.
Stone recounted his reaction, saying, "My husband said, 'This is ridiculous,' and walked out of the room." When asked what he found absurd, she clarified that it was her decision to undergo the mastectomy that upset him. Host David Begnaud pointed out that her husband seemed more troubled by the surgery than the cancer diagnosis itself, to which Stone firmly replied, "No, no." The tension escalated when her doctor stressed the importance of her health decision.
This moment marked a critical juncture in their relationship, with Stone stating, "That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over." She reflected on her husband's view of her choices, noting that he felt she was making too many independent decisions. This pivotal incident ultimately contributed to the end of their marriage.
Fortunately, Stone later learned that the tumors were benign. Although she did not mention her ex-husband's name during the podcast, she was married to journalist Phil Bronstein from 1998 to 2004, with whom she adopted a son, Roan, in 2000. Stone was also previously married to television producer Michael Greenburg from 1984 to 1990 and has since adopted two more sons, Laird and Quinn, expanding her family further.
