Nicolas Cage's Unique Interests

Nicolas Cage is a well-known figure in Hollywood, celebrated not only for his acting but also for his diverse interests and notable acquisitions, which include everything from historic properties to rare dinosaur fossils. One of his most cherished hobbies is his vast comic book collection, once regarded as one of the most significant in the industry. This passion led to a dramatic saga involving the theft and eventual recovery of a highly sought-after comic: a 1938 edition of Action Comics #1.

The Purchase and Theft

In 1996, Cage acquired this iconic comic, which features Superman's first appearance, for $150,000 from Metropolis Collectibles. Graded at 9.0 by the Certified Guaranty Company, it was one of only two copies known to exist at that grade. This comic was part of a larger collection that included other landmark issues, such as the debuts of Batman, Spider-Man, and the Justice Society of America.

However, in 2000, during a party at his West Los Angeles home, the comic was stolen. Despite the involvement of law enforcement, the investigation stalled, and the comic remained missing for over ten years. Collectibles experts kept a watchful eye, hoping it would eventually appear on the market.

The Discovery and Return

A significant breakthrough occurred in 2011 when the comic was found in an abandoned storage unit in San Fernando. The new owner of the locker discovered the comic still in its original protective casing. Authorities were alerted, and the comic's authenticity was confirmed through serial numbers and insurance records. It was returned to Cage, who later decided to auction it through ComicConnect, where it sold for an impressive $2.16 million.

A New Record in Collectibles

The saga of Action Comics #1 didn't end there. Recent reports indicate that in January 2026, the comic was sold again through a private deal for an astonishing $15 million, solidifying its reputation as one of the most valuable pieces of pop culture memorabilia ever sold.
