Michelle Yeoh Honored as Asian Filmmaker of the Year

Renowned actress Michelle Yeoh has been awarded the title of Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), a significant recognition celebrating her remarkable contributions to Asian cinema. This announcement was made by Variety, revealing that Yeoh will be presented with this honor during the festival's opening ceremony on October 6 at the Busan Cinema Centre, hosted by Kim Minha, a prominent figure from the series 'Pachinko.'

Yeoh's remarkable journey in the film industry began in Hong Kong's action genre with her debut in 'Yes, Madam!' back in 1985. She quickly rose to fame with notable performances in 'Police Story 3: Supercop' (1992) and 'Wing Chun' (1994), where she played a crucial role in reshaping the portrayal of action heroines on screen. Her international acclaim soared with her role in the James Bond film 'Tomorrow Never Dies' in 1997, followed by her unforgettable performance in Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' in 2000, which garnered both critical and commercial success.

In recent years, Yeoh has continued to enchant audiences with her roles in films like 'Crazy Rich Asians' (2018), 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' (2021), and 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' (2022). Her performance in the latter made history as she became the first Asian actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, also receiving accolades from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. Earlier this year, she was honored as the first Asian woman to receive the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Yeoh has a long-standing connection with BIFF, having first participated in the festival in 2002 for the Pusan Promotion Plan, now known as the Asian Project Market. Over the years, she has returned with various films, including 'Far North' (2007) and 'The Lady' (2011). This year marks her return to the BIFF red carpet for the first time since 2011, when she attended with 'The Lady.'

To celebrate her achievements, BIFF will present a Special Program in Focus featuring three films personally chosen by Yeoh: 'Reign of Assassins,' 'Everything Everywhere All at Once,' and 'Sandiwara' (2026). Additionally, her upcoming feature, 'It's My Time' (2026), will be showcased as part of the retrospective. The 31st Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to run from October 6 to 15 at the Busan Cinema Centre and various locations throughout the city, while the 21st Asian Contents & Film Market will take place from October 10 to 13.
