A Glorious Past in Los Angeles

Before achieving its impressive multi-million dollar valuation, a remarkable Colonial Revival mansion in Los Angeles was home to actor Denzel Washington and his spouse, Pauletta. Washington acquired the property in 1988 for $1.1 million, marking the start of a significant chapter in the estate's rich history within the Southern California entertainment scene. This expansive residence, covering 6,300 square feet on a spacious half-acre lot, exemplifies mid-century architectural sophistication.

The mansion was commissioned in 1940 by the trailblazing African American architect Paul Revere Williams, who was instrumental in defining luxury living in Southern California. Williams designed homes for many notable personalities of his time, including Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, and Cary Grant. Over the years, the property has retained its original charm, featuring detailed moldings, custom cabinetry, large picture windows, and dual fireplaces in both the living and family rooms. The estate also boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, a swimming pool with a cabana, a koi pond, and a separate guest house.

A Legacy of Hollywood Ownership

The mansion's ties to the entertainment world extend beyond the Washington family's residence. Initially built for comedian and actor Leon Errol, known for his roles in films like The Girl from Mexico and The Invisible Man's Revenge, the property later became home to Oscar-winning actor William Holden and his wife, actress Brenda Marshall, from 1947 to 1959. During their stay, the couple famously hosted the wedding reception for Ronald and Nancy Reagan in 1952.

Denzel and Pauletta Washington sold the estate in 2000 for $1.9 million to television writer and producer Brenda Hampton. After her acquisition, Hampton undertook renovations before eventually putting the property back on the market. In 2019, the mansion changed hands again, selling for $4.445 million. Despite its various owners since its construction in the 1940s, the mansion remains a significant landmark in Los Angeles real estate history. As of the latest updates, the current owner's identity has not been disclosed.
