Curry Barker's Journey to 'Obsession'

Director Curry Barker, known for his earlier works The Chair and Milk & Serial, has now made waves with his latest film, Obsession, which is currently a hit at the global box office. Before this theatrical debut, Barker had already captured audience attention with his first feature, which premiered directly on YouTube. As Obsession rises in popularity, producer James Harris has publicly praised Barker's talent. In a statement, Harris shared his admiration after watching The Chair, which led him to approach Barker for collaboration.

“I was truly impressed by the cinematic quality of The Chair,” Harris remarked, highlighting his immediate recognition of Barker's exceptional talent. He described Barker as a ‘driven and exceptionally talented’ filmmaker who possesses a keen understanding of the genre. “Curry is incredibly intelligent and knows how to weave suspense while adding depth to his projects,” he added.

The Making of 'Obsession'

Initially, Harris was interested in adapting The Chair into a feature film with Barker. However, when Barker introduced the concept for Obsession, Harris felt it was the perfect fit. “The concept for Obsession was outstanding—so clever and perfectly aligned with modern horror trends, making it an easy choice,” he explained.

For those who may not know, Harris has been involved in notable projects like 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey at Night. Obsession stars Michael Johnston as Bear, Inde Navarrette as Nikki, along with Cooper Tomlinson and Andy Richter. The film's synopsis reveals a tale of a hopeless romantic who, after breaking the mysterious 'One Wish Willow' to win over his crush, discovers that some wishes come with a dark twist.

Festival Success and Future Release Plans

Obsession premiered in the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and continued to gain recognition at festivals like Fantastic Fest and South by Southwest (SXSW). Reports indicate that the film will be available on digital video-on-demand (VOD) platforms, including an unrated version, on June 2, 2026, with official confirmation expected soon. Additionally, it is set to stream on Peacock for subscribers later this summer. The film had its international release on May 14, with its debut in India planned for May 29.
