Brad Pitt Opens Up About His Mental Health Journey Amid Personal Turmoil
Brad Pitt's Candid Reflections on Mental Health
In a recent interview with Esquire, Brad Pitt shared insights into a challenging chapter of his life, revealing how personal and familial issues have deeply affected his mental health. The 62-year-old Oscar-winning actor opened up about his struggles with alcohol and emphasized the significance of his survival instincts during tough times. Pitt, who has been involved in a protracted legal dispute with his former spouse Angelina Jolie, reflected on his mental health evolution over the last ten years.
Despite the chaos surrounding him, Pitt described himself as a "congenital optimist," asserting that he has never contemplated suicide. He stated, "I was never suicidal in any way. It just was not my makeup." However, he admitted that "family stuff" played a role in his declining mental health. Pitt and Jolie, once a beloved Hollywood couple, ended their marriage in 2016, with their divorce finalized in December 2024 after years of legal wrangling. They share six children, whose relationships with both parents have been under scrutiny amid ongoing disputes.
During the discussion, Pitt recalled a particularly dark time when emotional distress felt insurmountable. He acknowledged that while he never planned to act on suicidal thoughts, he understood why some might see it as a way out. "The pain was so oppressive," he remembered, noting that his survival instinct ultimately took over during that period. "We have incredible survival instincts. And for me, that immediately kicked in," he elaborated.
Pitt also addressed his relationship with alcohol, revealing that after seven years of sobriety, he resumed drinking but in a more measured way. "I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon," he said with a chuckle. He stressed that he now drinks responsibly and is aware of when alcohol could harm his health. "I can have a few, but I can’t have a lot. I have to be professional about it," he remarked.
Previously, Pitt credited Alcoholics Anonymous for supporting his sobriety journey, sharing that he attended meetings for about a year and a half following his split from Jolie. He expressed gratitude for the encouragement he received from friends, including actor Bradley Cooper. Reflecting on his challenges, Pitt noted, "I was pretty much on my knees, and I was really open," highlighting his readiness to seek help during a tumultuous period in his life. The ongoing legal disputes with Jolie, including issues over their shared vineyard and allegations of abuse, have further complicated his personal struggles.
