A Milestone for Indian Cinema

Acclaimed filmmaker Gurvinder Singh has reached a remarkable achievement with his latest project, 'Rehmat,' being selected for the Main Competition at the 79th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. This film features the legendary Naseeruddin Shah and is scheduled to debut on August 6, competing for the coveted Pardo d'Oro (Golden Leopard). Notably, it stands as the sole Indian film in this year's prestigious lineup. The festival, taking place from August 5 to 15, marks India's return to the main competition after a four-year absence, with the last Indian film being Mahesh Narayanan's 'Ariyippu' in 2022.

'Rehmat' showcases a talented cast led by Naseeruddin Shah, alongside Suvinder Vicky, Mita Vasisht, Navjot Randhawa, and newcomers Diya Kamboj, Harwinder Aujla, and Jaswant Zafar, who is making his acting debut. Shah plays Rashid Ali, a character whose family migrated from Punjab just before the 1947 Partition. After decades in England, he returns to his roots, where the story unfolds against the backdrop of modern Punjab.

Set in contemporary Punjab, 'Rehmat' weaves together three unique narratives. One storyline follows a young woman who hides an injured stranger while evading law enforcement. Another portrays a family dealing with the absence of a loved one, as children grow up without their father, and an elderly grandfather takes on the household's responsibilities. The third narrative focuses on an elderly man who arrives in a village claiming to be God. The film draws inspiration from the works of renowned Punjabi author Ajeet Cour, celebrated for her strong feminist viewpoint.

In addition to vying for the Pardo d'Oro, 'Rehmat' is also nominated for the festival's Pardo for Change award, which recognizes films that stimulate conversations on social, cultural, ethical, and environmental matters. A total of 13 films from various festival sections have been nominated for this honor. 'Rehmat' marks the first production from Paris-based Pavo Films, co-produced with India's Vahao Studio, highlighting a significant collaboration in the film industry.
