Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga graced the International Film Festival of Delhi 2026 (IFFD 2026) on March 31, 2026. She hosted a session titled 'From Indie Roots to the Oscars.' Monga's documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, earned the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. During the event, she shared her experiences with the media, discussing the ageism she encountered in her career and the distribution challenges faced by producers.

Insights from Guneet Monga on Her Career

In a heartfelt conversation with reporters, Guneet expressed her joy at being recognized by the IFFD 2026 organizers, stating, “It feels wonderful to receive this honor in Delhi, my hometown. This moment is truly special for me.” When asked about the global achievements of Indian cinema, she emphasized the collaborative nature of these successes, noting that India is just beginning to make its mark.

She remarked, “The 2023 Oscars showcased films like RRR, All That Breathes, and The Elephant Whisperers, highlighting the diversity of languages and formats in Indian cinema. We have remarkable filmmakers in India, and this is just the beginning.”

Challenges in Film Distribution

Guneet also addressed the hurdles producers face in film distribution, stating, “Distribution remains a significant challenge. To tackle this, one must be innovative and confident in storytelling. It requires additional support, as the quality of work should resonate the loudest.” When questioned about gender inequality in the industry, she noted, "I have encountered ageism more than gender bias. Being a young producer in the industry posed its own challenges. However, today, the quality of work speaks volumes, and I take pride in being a woman in this field.”
