Golden Globes 2023: Major Wins for Anderson and Zhao
Highlights from the Golden Globes Ceremony
The Golden Globes, held on Sunday night in Los Angeles, celebrated notable films, with Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another and Chloe Zhao's Hamnet taking center stage. Anderson's political drama, which follows a former revolutionary's quest to save his kidnapped daughter, secured the Best Picture award in the musical comedy category, as the Globes categorize nominees into drama and musical/comedy genres.
One Battle After Another also earned accolades for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Teyana Taylor received the Best Female Supporting Actor award for her role as the activist Perfidia, dedicating her win to 'my brown sisters, and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability.'
Zhao's Hamnet was awarded Best Picture in the Drama category. This film, adapted from Maggie O'Connell's novel, delves into the sorrow faced by William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes after the tragic loss of their 11-year-old son. Jessie Buckley, portraying Agnes, won the Best Actress award in the Drama category.
In the musical or comedy category, Rose Byrne took home the Best Actress award for her performance in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, where she plays a mother dealing with her child's feeding disorder.
Wagner Moura was recognized as Best Actor in a Drama for his role in Kleber Mendonca Filho’s The Secret Agent, a film set during Brazil's military dictatorship in 1977. Moura plays a dissident professor evading authorities and an old rival. The film also won Best Motion Picture – Non-English.
During his acceptance speech, Moura remarked, 'The Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory. And generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too.'
Timothée Chalamet won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role as a table tennis player in Marty Supreme, while Stellan Skarsgard was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value.
Other notable winners included KPop Demon Hunters, which won Best Animated Film, and Ludwig Goransson, who received the award for Best Original Score for Sinners.
In television, Adolescence (Netflix) won four awards, including Best Limited or Anthology Series and Best Actor in a Limited Series for Stephen Graham. The show features four single-take episodes about a teenager who commits murder.
The Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy was awarded to The Studio (Apple TV+), featuring Seth Rogen as a Hollywood executive balancing business and creativity.
The Pitt (JioHotstar) was recognized as Best Drama in the television category, with Noah Wyle winning Best Actor in a Drama for his role in the series.
Rhea Seehorn was named Best Actress in a Drama for Pluribus, while Michelle Williams took home the award for Best Actress in a Limited Series for Dying for Sex.
While political commentary was sparse, presenter Judd Apatow remarked, 'I believe we are in a dictatorship now.' Kleber Mendonca Filho, director of The Secret Agent, emphasized the significance of filmmaking during these times.
Jack Thorne, co-creator of Adolescence, stated, 'Removing hate is our generation’s responsibility. It requires thought from the top down. The possibility seems remote right now, but hope is a beautiful thing.'
