Purbayan Chatterjee on Farhan Akhtar in The Beatles
In an exclusive interview, renowned sitarist and composer Purbayan Chatterjee expressed his privilege in sharing knowledge about the musical, technical, and cultural aspects of Pandit Ravi Shankar's legacy.
"Authenticity is vital because Ravi Shankar was not just a famous sitar player; he revolutionized the global understanding of Indian music. The subtleties matter: how a musician presents themselves, the crafting of a meend, and the dynamics of the guru-shishya relationship. For audiences to appreciate his influence, they must experience the true artist rather than a diluted version. Thankfully, Farhan approaches this role with immense seriousness and respect, which is very encouraging," Chatterjee remarked.
The Legacy of Ravi Shankar
Chatterjee emphasized that Ravi Shankar showcased how 'authenticity' resonates more profoundly than mere imitation. He believed that the legendary sitarist never compromised Indian classical music for wider appeal, trusting audiences to engage with it authentically. "Through world music festivals, jazz collaborations, film scores, or projects like Feathered Creatures, musicians are continually discovering common ground while preserving their identities. Young listeners might first encounter a raga through platforms like Spotify or YouTube, and then explore the tradition more deeply. In many ways, we are all still navigating the bridge that Ravi Shankar built," he noted.
